GENERAL GOLD SELLECK SILLIMAN - AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED. GOLD SELLECK SILLIMAN Near the end of the Revolutionary War (July 15, 1783), General Silliman signs an 8-page autograph letter to General David Forman, detailing measures he has taken in a criminal investigation of "illicit trade with the enemy." Autograph Letter signed: "G. Selleck Silliman", 8 pages (front and verso), 7¼x9¼. Fairfield (Connecticut), 1783 July 15. To Brigadier General Forman. In full: "Your favour of the 4th June by Darius Fulsom is duely [sic] received on the 7th Instant, together with the Papers enclosed. I have carefully attended to the whole. Barlow was and still is at Sea so that he could not be seen as Cap Hait, Mr. Van Dyck, Benjamin Brooks, and sundry other Persons not named in your Letter. I used a proper Proof and sent an officer and summoned him before a Justice of the Peace, and have taken the Depositions of those of him, which appeared to me to be necessary in your Cause. These Depositions are taken according to the Laws in this State, and would be legal evidence in the Cause, were the trial to be held here. And I cannot easily conceive a reason why they should not be evidence with you, (without the Trouble of obtaining a special Commission to take them) as it is the Cause of the Admiralty. Proceedings to have all their testimony in Deposition. I have sent you copies of the Depositions that I have taken, that you may judge how fare they will answer your Purpose, and also the Depositions themselves up to be used in Court if admissible. You will find the Matter of Jackson, being at New York, at and about the Time you mention, proved by Mr. Van Dyck and Cap Hait beyond any possible Doubt. And they are Witness of such fair unblemished Characters, that a Witness that contradicts them ought to have a very fair Character if he would be believed.
